AVCC Activity Programs
The AVCC Adult Activities Programs provide support and activities for consumers who have been identified with special needs as well as individuals of retirement age. These programs include activities in one of two Day Program Sites, at La Junta or Las Animas. The activity program also offers community access activities for those individuals who wish to engage in community involvement when they are not focusing on work. Daily living and social skills are developed and supported through our assessment process.

La Junta Day Program Site
AVCC's Day Program Site in La Junta presently provides training and support to individuals assessed for the development of skills needed to perform simple everyday tasks. Programs are developed to concentrate on hand-eye coordination through sedentary activities that use and develop small motor skills. Social skills are supported through community outings and communication. AVCC offers a more structured atmosphere in supporting our behavioral challenged population. Here, individuals receive constant and consistent support. Activities and outings are offered with advance notice, forecasting situations that may arise. Coping skills are the main focus of development with our individuals assessed in this setting. Within this program, those being served are ambulatory and non-ambulatory, verbal and non-verbal, and physically impaired individuals. Staff is challenged to meet the basic human needs of this total care program; rehabilitative/physical therapy programs are individually
adhered to on a consistent basis. Many of our retirement aged individuals are also supported within this program.
In the planning stages is an exercise/physical therapy room. Exercise equipment is presently available to include: tread mill, stair-stepper, stationary bicycles, exercise balls, sit-up roller, and resistance bands; floor mats are in place for stretching.
Included in these plans is the possibility of a lounge; offering aroma therapy, music, television, with an area for quiet conversation and snacks.

Individuals are assessed and provided the necessary direction and support according to their needs and abilities. AVCC provides opportunities, and training to each consumer to develop his/her ability. Community outings and activities are encouraged to enhance social skills, enabling possibilities of new friendships and nurturing the existence of established relationships with members of the community.
